Phora Video Interview: Watch | Billboard
In this week’s episode of ‘You Should Know,’ Billboard sits down with Phora to find out what his music-making process is like, what inspired his album Bury Me With Dead Roses, who his dream collaboration would be with, and more.
Asked if he has ever felt starstruck, Phora recalls the time when he was at a Drake concert and they locked eyes with each other. “Drake actually looked me in the eyes and rapped to me,” Phora tells Billboard. “It was weird but tight. Yeah, I was starstruck. I was like, ‘Is he looking at me? Is he looking at me? He’s looking at me!’”
Speaking of his music-making process, Phora notes that he likes to be alone when he creates new songs. “I write a lot about my personal life,” he explains. “I just like to be alone and I like to have the beat. I record in…my home studio. I hear the beat, I gotta feel the music…when I hear the beat, I just vibe out with it and I start writing from there.”
On his latest album Bury Me With Dead Roses, Phora shares that it was inspired by life, pain, beauty, death, and the full circle of life. “I feel like we’re all similar to a rose the way we blossom and grow and eventually, everything comes to an end,” he says.
For anyone who might be unfamiliar with his music and is looking for a good first track to listen to, Phora suggests “Love Yourself” from his latest album. Calling it an “uplifting song,” he explains, “We all go through ups and downs, but at the end of the day, you just gotta find the strength to love yourself, and anyone out there who’s going through some type of hard time, I guarantee it’ll make you feel a little bit better.”
As for who Phora’s dream collaboration would be with, he names J. Cole, calling him a “great story teller” who has a connection with the people he talks to.
“Everything he does, I can relate to a lot of the things he says,” Phora says. “I feel like we would make a great record because I’m all about connecting with people, connecting with fans, and I feel like it would just make the most sense out of any artist I know.”
